Popis: | The influence of temperature, atmosphere and drying conditions, on the pre-processing degradation of PET, which is known to give volatile aldehydic products, was investigated using thermogravimetric analysis, the formation of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazones and solid/gas headspace chromatography. It was shown that formaldehyde and acetaldehyde were formed in rather large quantities, depending upon temperature, drying and processing atmospheres, and molecular weight. Various low molecular weight compounds selected as models of structural particularities in the polymer chain were allowed to age under comparable conditions. Comparison of the behaviours of PET and of model compounds showed that degradation is largely at chain ends. |
