Popis: Gonadal steroid hormones have a tremendous impact on the developing adolescent brain. Here we highlight the studies demonstrating that adolescence is a sensitive period for the effects of gonadal steroid hormones on brain and behavioral development in both males and females. Indeed, both human and animal studies suggest that gonadal steroid hormones alter the trajectory of brain and behavioral development during adolescence in a sex-specific manner. Emerging evidence further suggests that adolescence is part of a protracted sensitive period for the effects of gonadal steroid hormones that begins perinatally and ends following adolescence.
