The dystopic society is a place where undesirable, miserable and uninvited things happen. Many prominent authors in the field of literature has taken up dystopia as a form of writing so that they could bring into limelight the mis-happenings of the society; Margaret Atwood is one of them. Among her works The Handmaid's Tale is one novel which portrays the life of people of a totalitarian society where the rulers have taken up the story of Rachel and Bilhah from the Bible to accomplish what they want and also to justify their actions. It is set in a futuristic world making it all the more alarming and imaginable. Dystopian novels are very important in the field of literature as they bring with them harsh notes that come as warnings to people. This paper, as the title suggests, tries to highlight the dystopic elements in the novel. |
