Popis: This chapter examines narratives that reflect the impact of epistemologies of otherness upon our understanding of race. Race intersects with other social factors such as class, cultural citizenship, and gender. This chapter draws on case studies of artists in exile or diaspora who interrogate their own identities, because exile brings racial tensions into stark relief when brought into conflict with personal identity. Narratives engaged with epistemologies of otherness inform works about exile and works produced in exile. I also examine how the recent emergence of whiteness changes notions of race. Lastly, it is important to take a step back and examine the process of knowledge production.
