Empathy and Theory of Mind (ToM) form the affective and cognitive building blocks for interpersonal understanding. Recent findings suggest a dynamic interplay between the two constructs. However, there remain open questions about the extent of their relation - for example, whether empathy and ToM are related to each other during their development. To shed light on this question, we systematically reviewed 80 studies that reported correlations between empathy and ToM in healthy children, with the samples’ mean age ranging from 4 to 13 years. We identified these studies by searching five electronic databases (ISI Web of Science (core collection), PubMed, PsycArticles, PsycInfo, PsyIndex) and plan to conduct a meta-analysis detailing the impact of type of assessment, task category and age of the children. |
