Popis:	Differences in the performance of an ``inverse pinch'' electromagnetic shock tube with and without a high degree of preionization are discussed. Only collision‐controlled magnetohydrodynamic shock waves are considered. It is found that the flow in the absence of preionization may differ substantially from that when the gas is preheated. Experiments carried out for both cases show qualitative agreement with the theory.
