Popis: Bartlett (1969) reported that scores on [he Attitude Scale of the Career Maturity Inventory Attitude Scale (Crites, 1973) were related to self-confidence. (The attitude scale measures maturity of the attitudes of subjects toward making a career choice.) To check upon this result, the attitude scale was given along with a test of self-confidence (Girdano & Everly, 1979) to 86 high school students (M,,, E 16.2 yr., SD = 0.4) and 96 college students (M,,, = 20.5 yr., SD = 1.7). Most were judged of lower and middle class. The two groups differed significantly in scores on the Career Maturity Inventory (Ms of 33.9 and 37.5, SDs of 6.4 and 5.6, respectively; Fl/lis = 17.36, fi < 0.001), and boys and girls also differed (Ms of 34.4 and 37.1, respectively; = 10.23, P < 0.002). The college students showed no significant difference in Career Maturity Inventory scores by year in college. Self-confidence scores were associated with inventory scores both for the high school students (Pearson r = 0.31, p = 0.002) and for the college students (r = 0.25, fi = 0.008). This study showed that mature attitudes toward careers were higher for girls and college students rhan for the high school students and for those with higher self-confidence.
