Patients with chronic cough are characterised by an exquisite sensitivity to external stimuli that are innocuous to the normal population. Different treatable conditions exist such as asthma or asthma-like syndromes responding to anti-inflammatory treatment, reflux being treated with a number of agents such as promotility and anti-acid drugs, and chronic rhinosinusitis responding to anti-inflammatory and/or antibiotic treatment. Currently available guidelines provide simple but effective means to diagnose and treat such conditions. A challenging aspect in chronic cough management is the diagnosis and treatment of the so-called unexplained, refractory, or idiopathic chronic cough, for which no specific therapy is currently available. |
