Cancer of the large bowel — colon and rectum — is a disease of the affluent, westernized cultures of Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Like most neoplasms of an epithelial origin, cancer of the colon and rectum increases exponentially with age. Geographical variations in large bowel cancer incidence are recorded within countries, but they are typically much less than the observed international differences. The refined protein-rich, high-fat diet of western cultures has attracted particular attention as a possible cause of the high incidence in those countries. O. Gregor et al. thus found a high correlation between colon cancer mortality and the intake of animal protein. “Roughage” in the diet was suggested to be protective against colon cancer already by J. Higginson and A. G. Oettle in the 1960s, and D. P. Burkitt later suggested that a low content of dietary fiber in the western diet would be responsible for the high colon cancer risk in that part of the world. |
