Popis: A large body of research has examined how personality relates to depression. Anhedonia is a cardinal symptom of depression with important implications for treatment yet there is relatively little research examining its relationship to personality. Past research highlights possible relationships between anhedonia and social traits, as well as affective traits. This study investigated the Big Five traits and Beck's sociotropy and autonomy traits in predicting anhedonia compared to depression symptoms more generally. Undergraduate students (N = 163) completed the Big Five Inventory (BFI), Sociotropy Autonomy Scale (SAS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), and the Specific Loss of Interest and Pleasure Scale (SLIPS). Results suggested that neuroticism was more strongly related to BDI-II depression symptoms than anhedonia. Although neuroticism and conscientiousness were the only unique significant predictors of BDI-II depression symptoms, the social and affective traits extraversion, agreeableness, and sociotropy (inversely) predicted anhedonia over and above what could be explained by neuroticism and conscientiousness. Taken together, the results suggest these social and affective personality traits may play an important role in predicting levels of anhedonia but not depressive symptoms generally. Implications for the role of personality in depression, and in anhedonia more specifically, are discussed.
