This chapter looks at learning to read and write words, and the role of knowledge about sounds and letters in this learning. It shows that bilingual children may develop a general ability to reflect on language relatively early in life as they learn to coordinate their different language systems. The chapter also looks at some of the ways in which young children learn to decode words and has given some suggestions for helping children's development in this area. It examines how the English writing system makes use of the alphabetic principle in which the sounds of the language are represented by the letters of the alphabet. Strategies for facilitating phonological awareness are given, some of which may also enhance grammatical awareness. It is important that early childhood professionals provide experiences, since it has been shown that phonological awareness and letter recognition are necessary for reading and writing an alphabetic language such as English. |
