Popis: Invasive fungal disease can cause a high degree of mortality within the immunocompromised patient population. Only three classes of antifungal agent are currently in widespread use to treat these infections. Progress has been made with the introduction of third-generation azoles and echinocandins but changes in fungal epidemiology and the emergence of resistant organisms threaten to undermine the effectiveness of these agents. There has been a recent resurgence in antifungal research activity that has led to the discovery of several novel mechanisms based antifungals, active against resistant organisms. These new agents have the potential to improve antifungal therapy and offer treatment for resistant fungal pathogens.
