Conflicts among population, resources and environment are becoming increasingly serious with the growth of population, as well as the developments of economy and society. As a result, resource scarcity and environment destruction caused researchers' and decision makers' attentions worldwide. Evaluating the development level of society has been concerned as a promising way to urge it to be resource- conserving and environment-friendly. In this paper, we firstly proposed an improved indicator system used for evaluating the development level of society. Then, mathematical models was utilized to evaluate the development level of Changde City from 2003 to 2008 in terms of the degrees of social development index, social coordination, and society sustaining based on the selective indicators. Results suggest that while the degrees of social development index and social coordination increased over the period of from 2003 to 2008, the social development process in Changde city was not sustainable before 2008. The declination of the degree of society sustaining may be contributed to the unreasonable economy growth. |
