Popis: | Recent observations of the energy-dependent structure of the outer-belt electron population have given clues to the mechanisms that are active in that region. Mihalov and White [1966] and Mihalov [1967] have observed the locations of peak intensities of electrons of various energies that compare favorably with theoretical predictions based on a radial diffusion model in which the first two adiabatic invariants are conserved. Such models have been studied extensively by Parker [1960], Davis and Chang [1962], Nakada and Mead, [1965], Falthammar [1965, 1966], and Tverskoy [1964, 1965]. Additional indications that radial diffusion is active have been furnished by the measurements of Frank [1965] and Craven [1966] on the inward motion of the replenishment electron wave that follows a sudden depletion of the outer belt. |
