Popis: As a Black cisgender woman who grew up both working-class and poor, as well as a first-generation college student who attended public institutions from kindergarten through graduate school, I describe my journey through the tenure process at a majority White private Catholic university on the East Coast. I draw on Black feminist thought (Collins, 2000) as a lens to understand and name my experiences through the tenure and promotion process. I describe how my passion for equity and social justice was met swiftly by resistant White teacher candidates with some adversarial results in relation to my third-year pre-tenure review. However, I also discuss the ways by which I navigated this difficult process by building my dossier, as well as the ways by which I have attempted to build community and empathy in my work as a Black woman education scholar.
