Popis: A new program at the Air Force Research Laboratory has been -initiated and is entitled “The SelfConsuming Satellite.” It is anticipated that this program will be able to reduce the mass of the satellite by using propellant as part of the load-bearing structure of the satellite. It is also envisioned that this system may add significant amount of damping to the structure, which will alleviate some of the launch vehicle acoustic loads. Therefore, damping will also decrease the satellite mass because less of the satellite structure is need to dismiss acoustic transmission. Preliminary case studies for TechSat 21 show that the technologies needed for a selfconsuming satellite such as pulsed plasma thrusters or digital microthrusters may be able to perform the propulsion maneuvers needed for the actual TechSat 21 mission.
