Popis: This study investigates the finished surface of cemented carbide obtained by direct cutting with a diamond-coated carbide end mill. Excellent cutting performance in the direct cutting of cemented carbide can be achieved using a diamond-coated carbide end mill under ultrasmall feed rates. The quality of the finished surface was primarily evaluated in terms of surface appearance, profile, and transverse rupture strength. The finished surfaces obtained by electric discharge machining and mechanical polishing were also evaluated to compare the surface quality. A WC-Co composite cemented carbide material (CIS VC-70) was used as the workpiece, and the transverse rupture strength test was conducted according to the CIS 026B. The finished surfaces obtained by direct cutting and mechanical polishing were shown as mirror surface. The size of the WC grain observed on the finished surface obtained by direct cutting was smaller than the mean grain size of the workpiece before the cutting process. Minute unevenness was conspicuous on the finished surface obtained by direct cutting when compared with that by mechanical polishing. The transverse rupture strength of the workpiece finished by direct cutting was the highest in the three types of processing method.
