Popis: Fatigue of the respiratory muscles is thought to play an important role in the pathophysiology of CO2 retention and respiratory pump failure [1]. Fatigue is a condition in which there is a loss in the capacity for developing force or velocity of a muscle resulting from muscle activity under load and which is reversible by rest [2]. A fatiguing load alters the timing and coordination of respiratory muscle use. The pathophysiological basis of respiratory muscle dynamics and coordination in experimental fatigue syndromes and in the context of respiratory pump failure in patients is the subject of this chapter.
