Popis: Reports of the successful production of pneumonia in animals using beta-hemolytic streptococci of human origin are few. In those which have been published and which are reviewed below, studies of the cellular changes which take place in the very early periods following initiation of infection have not been carried out and only the pathologic features present 24 hours or longer after inoculation have been described. Although indirect evidence indicating the importance of the histiocyte in the defense against invasion by Streptococcus pyogenes has been obtained by Gay and his associates, direct proof that this cell is of prime importance in the cellular reaction in fatal or non-fatal streptococcal pneumonia and that the polymorphonuclear leucocyte plays a very minor role is still lacking.
