Because of the increased interest in calculating and designing a shield against high-energy protons the possibility was examined of studying the shielding properties of various materials with the aid of a collimated proton beam obtained on the synchrocyclotron of the Joint Institute of Nuclear Research. The procedure for converting from ‘narrow beam’ geometry to ‘broad beam’ geometry is substantiated. Possible methods of recording the dose beyond the shield are discussed. The method used by the authors for obtaining monoenergetic proton beams with an energy of 100–660 MeV is described. The characteristics of the beams obtained are given and the neutron contamination in the emergent beam is evaluated on the basis of experimental data. |
