The classification, diagnostic criteria, and characteristics of various personality disorders are currently being reconsidered by the DSM-IV Committee on Child and Adolescent Diagnoses. One of the critical issues is the fact that, until now, the disorders are classified as axis II disorders that are thought to be secondary to another psychiatric disorder. The degree of pathology and severe interference in living as well as recent understanding of developmental factors in the etiology of some of these disorders warrants calling them primary, or axis I, disorders. |
