Popis: The Ares I vehicle has a number of challenging stage and structure separation systems. Tradeoffs concerning reliability, envelope restrictions, structural integrity, pyrotechnic shock, debris mitigation, and cost must be performed to assure a system is selected that optimizes these parameters. Generating analytical models for system optimization combined with validation testing of concepts are important elements for collecting data used in the trade studies. Ensign-Bickford Aerospace and Defense Company has completed comprehensive separation system analysis using software packages such as CTH developed by Sandia National Laboratories and ANSYS LS-DYNA to predict system performance. EBA&D has also performed comparative testing of Linear Shaped Charge and Frangible Joint separation systems to validate and correlate the analysis in support of the Ares I separation systems. Concept analysis and validation test data from these activities is presented.
