Popis: During 1982 and 1983, pheromone-trap captures of lesser cornstalk borer, Elasmopalpus lignosellus (Zeller), were compared to absolute numbers of adult males and females in grain sorghum, soybean, peanut, and corn. Actual adult numbers were estimated by flushing, and precision of the absolute sampling procedures was moderate to good. Estimates of both male and female numbers correlated well with pheromone-trap captures, and the relationships were statistically similar in each crop and year. Female numbers were fewer than male numbers on most sample dates, apparently because female populations developed more slowly than male populations. As a result, relationships between pheromone-trap captures and actual adult numbers were statistically different for each sex. Our results indicate that pheromone trapping is useful for providing relative estimates of both male and female numbers in agricultural systems. Dispersion statistics of mean/variance ratio, standardized Morisita's index, and Taylor's power law were calculated for male and female 1983 flushing estimates, and moth populations were randomly distributed or slightly aggregated on all dates.
