Ranging from small and simple to large and complex, ventral and incisional hernias have plagued patients and surgeons for centuries. Methods of prevention and repair have evolved considerably over time, particularly with the advent of synthetic mesh and laparoscopy. Recent randomized controlled studies have helped to compare repair methods, but standardization of techniques and long-term follow-up will improve our approach to the patient with a ventral hernia. This chapter provides a brief review of the major advances in incisional and ventral hernia repair in the last 100 years. |
