Popis: | As part of the MC252 oil spill response action, BP initiated a program of adding dispersants subsea at the well head. This tool was considered in addition to other primary response strategies, such as mechanical retrieval, aerial dispersant applications, and in situ burning. Dispersants were used in the subsurface beginning on April 30, 2010 with preliminary testing through July 15, 2010. Approval for operational use occurred on May 15, 2010. The Subsurface Monitoring Unit was established to evaluate and track subsea dispersed oil using two vessels equipped for measuring conductivity, temperature, and depth, dissolved oxygen, and fluorometry, and for collecting deep water samples. Field fluorometry measurements were used to track the location of the subsea dispersed oil in real time and water chemistry samples were collected and analyzed to quantify the field measurements. This paper augments the shipboard findings of Aurand et al. (platform at SETAC 2010) with a discussion of the water column sa... |
