Three patients with typical cerebral arteriovenous malformations are described with case reports, angiographical findings and the findings at early sequential scintigraphy. The latter method of investigation has only been mentioned scarcely in the literature. It is in principle an extracranial recording of an intravenously injected radioactive bolus passing through the cephalic circulation, and is described in detail. It was found to visualize the arteriovenous malformations with a characteristically ramified ‘Starfish’ configuration. From the literature it is apparent that early diagnosis is important, but also that there often is a long interval between first symptom and final diagnosis. Early sequential scintigraphy is because it is free from complications and without discomfort to the patient suited as a screening method. From their own experience and on the basis of the literature, the authors point out the symptoms and signs which are commonly seen in connection with cerebral arteriovenous malformation, and clinical criteria which could be used for selecting patients who as the first step in an investigation with advantage could be studied with early sequential scintigraphy. |
