Popis: | In conjunction with an Environmental Impact Statement analysis being conducted for the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) Red Mountain Freeway by Entranco Engineers, Inc., Archaeological Consulting Services, Ltd. (ACS) performed cultural resource investigations of proposed alternative alignments. A Class I survey, or literature review, was first prepared for a 55-square-mile area to assist the initial alternative selection process. A Class III survey of all undeveloped rights-of-way followed. It was soon discovered that a number of historic buildings were present within the alternatives, and Gerald A. Doyle and Associates were brought in to help with the assessment. The freeway alternatives include the 1988-1989 alignment (east and west segments), two diversions of the 1988-1989 alignment called Crismon North and Crismon South, the SR87 to Higley Road Alternative, the Higley Road to Hawes Road Alternative, and the Red Mountain Park Bypass Alternative. Much of the 1988-1989 alignment was previously studied by Soil Systems, Inc. (SSI) (Gasser 1987; Landis 1987; Mitchell 1988), and therefore no new fieldwork was undertaken for these areas. However, there were several deviations from the alignment examined by SSI, and new fieldwork was required. The remaining alternatives were assessed as part of this study. Sixteen historic properties, 16 archaeological sites, four historic canals, and 157 isolated occurrences were recorded. However, adjustments to the alignments resulted in only seven historic properties, 12 archaeological sites, the four historic canals, and isolated occurrences being within the proposed alternatives. |
