Pain is one of the most common symptoms experienced by patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) 1 . Many patients who arrive in the ED are first seen by pre- hospital care providers such as EMS. When appropriate, initiation of pain control in the prehospital setting is crucial. However, Hewes and colleagues2 have shown that racial and ethnic disparities might exist in pre-hospital pain management. This retrospective observational study further characterizes the relationship between patient race and pain management in the pre-hospital setting. In contrast to previous studies, we 1) make use of patient-reported pain scores newly included in the National EMS Information System (NEMSIS), a national dataset on the patient level which was not available in previous versions of the NEMSIS dataset utilized by Hewes. |
