Over the past 10 years, we have developed a number of tentative rehabilitation plans for the residential quarters of the Old City of Beijing. Some of them have evolved to the stage of implementation. The work is reviewed here for the first time. We hope these attempts, while suggesting ways in which those particular neighbourhoods can be physically improved, will contribute to the formulation of rehabilitation strategies in this historic area as a whole through planning and design as well as on site experiments. It must be emphasised that the work is still in progress and many issues are yet to be examined. In this paper, first a retrospect of the residential redevelopment in the Old City is given, then a number of theoretical questions are discussed underpinning the design and experimental projects, an account of which is set out in the Research and Experiment section. Finally, we reflect upon the methodological implications of the research and projects. |
