Our objective in developing the Strauss-Albertini test was to provide a direct technique for assessing the in vivo incidence of mutant cells arising amongst circulating lymphocytes in animals and man. The test is an early attempt at direct estimation of genotoxic risk from environmental agents. My present intention is to review the development and primary applications of the test, update the method, and nurture interest in this seminal system. Except where indicated otherwise, I performed the experiments described here while a graduate student at the College of Medicine, University of Vermont (USA). |
