The nature of oral and maxillofacial surgery and the ‘shared airway’ necessitates that surgeon and anaesthetist establish a cooperative approach to patient care, based on constant communication and feedback throughout surgical procedures. A good understanding of each other’s priorities and concerns, and appreciation of each other’s knowledge and skills are essential in optimizing patient safety and outcome. This chapter provides an overview of surgical complications in oral and maxillofacial surgery and their management, from the perspective of the surgeon, which should enable the anaesthetist to gain greater insight and understanding of surgical decision-making and interventions, in order to anticipate or avoid potential problems, and deal with them swiftly and efficiently when they do occur. |
