Popis: | In the analysis of columns subjected to axial load pulses of short duration, the nonuniform distribution of longitudinal force along the axis has a significant effect upon the solution. Consequently, it is important to employ a formulation that properly accounts for the propa- gation of longitudinal and flexural waves and for their interaction. The equations of motion are simultaneous nonlinear partial differential equations. These are solved by an explicit finite difference procedure, taking into account the requirements for stability of the nu- merical analysis. Solutions are contrasted for two theories, in one of which the effects of rotatory inertia and transverse shear deformation are incorporated, whereas in the other these are omitted. A limited study of the effects of varying system parameters is also presented. For the problems treated, the induced flexural stresses are found to remain small in compari- son to the axial stresses. |
