Publisher Summary The tasks performed by data mining techniques can be classified in terms of either the analytical function they entail or their implementation focus. The first classification scheme takes the point of view of the data mining analyst. In this case, the analyst would classify the tasks on the basis of the problem type such as classification, estimation, prediction, clustering, and affinity analysis. A second business-based view of data mining tasks could be structured by grouping applications that relate to the management of “products,” “operations,” or “customers.” These three domains cover almost all aspects of any business. This chapter introduces a framework for the classification of data mining tasks in terms of the business view by dividing the applications into three areas of interest—(1) sales and marketing, (2) operations management, (3) finance. The chapter also discusses the implementation of data mining modeling that requires competencies and the typical stages of data flow. Later, the types of variables that would be included in the mining and scoring views are categorized. |
