A kinetic energy release study of the NO loss from several substituted nitrobenzene molecular ions

Popis: | The amount of kinetic energy released in the metastable ion reaction M+ → [M-NO]+ + NO· has been determined for several substituted nitrobenzenes by scanning the electric sector voltage of a double focusing mass spectrometer. The order of the amount of kinetic energy release is para > ortho > meta for substituted nitrobenzenes having an electron donating substituent, whereas the order is meta > ortho > para in the case of an electron-withdrawing substituent. These observations have been rationalized in terms of the stability of the generated [M-NO]+ ion and of the transition state ring size of the reaction. |
