Nasal polyposis appears as benign mucosal growths occupying the nasal and paranasal cavities, histologically consisting of connective edema and normal respiratory epithelium. Nasal polyposis is responsible for a variety of symptoms, such as nasal obstruction, rhinorrhea, loss of smell, headaches and weakness. Nasal cytology plays an important role in diagnosis and therapy of nasal polyposis. It helps to differentiate between polyposis associated or not to an allergic rhinitis, to identify bacterial superinfection and cellular alterations. In addition it helps to confirm the pharmacological efficacy, highlighting the presence or not of bacteria and immune phlogistic cells, and to verify the restoration of ciliary motility. |
