Popis: Summary Some problems involved with mass lesions of the mediastinum have been reviewed in connection with 102 cases admitted to and studied at University Hospital, Saskatoon, over a 14-year period. A simplified map of the mediastinum, dividing it up into three areas is advocated. The various methods used to diagnose the nature of mediastinal masses are discussed. Because of their importance, radiologic technics have been heavily accented with a critical appraisal of each. Liberal use has been made of photographs of x-rays to illustrate important features. The relative values of bronchoscopy, mediastinoscopy, scintiscanning and biopsy are considered. Different types of mass lesions have been discussed, using the histories of selected cases which were personally known to the authors to illustrate certain aspects. Finally, the use of radiotherapy is considered from the point of view of an adjunct to surgery, of a palliative measure and of a curative measure. The technics of its application are described as well as possible complications.
