Popis: A comparative study of the works, particularly with regard to the purpose of education, of J. H. Newman and Fukuzawa Yukichi serves to bring out the necessary complementarity, rather than exclusivity, of the liberal and utilitarian positions. The study places their work in the respective socio-economic and educational contexts of mid-nineteenth century Ireland and Japan.
