Popis: The paper presents a brief report of recent IAEA initiatives in the form of the International Project on Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles (INPRO) and the educational programme of the World Nuclear University (WNU). The focus is on the global role of nuclear education to reach the future world of sustainable development. Special emphasis is laid on those initiatives in Russia where knowledge preservation activities deserve more attention than they are given today. The situation with nuclear education in Russia is defined as a critical emergency, and the ways to meet this challenge are outlined. The newly established Russian Association of Nuclear Science and Technology (RANSE) is going to play the role of a centre of consolidation of various educational and research institutions to preserve the unique Russian nuclear experience.
