Popis: | Until recently, few Paleolithic research projects have been carried out in Dagestan in the Caucasus. The fi rst information on Lower Paleolithic artifacts collected from the surface in the vicinity of the village of Gedjuh was provided by M.Z. Panichkina in the late 1930s. Later, V.G. Kotovich made an archaeological survey of this area in the 1950s (Kotovich, 1964). He identifi ed the artifacts recovered from the Chumus-Inits site as the earliest (Acheulian) implements despite the total absence of handaxes, the most typical tools of the Acheulian culture in the Caucasus, within the collection. However, handaxes were discovered at several sites, e.g., Diubekchai, Darvagchai-quarry, Chumus-Inits and Rubas-1, in 2005, and proved the existence of Acheulian industries in Dagestan (Derevianko, Amirkhanov, Zenin, Anoikin, 2005). In the course of surveys that were carried out from 2003 – 2006 by the Joint Expedition of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography SB RAS, the Institute of Archaeology RAS, and the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology RAS, more than twenty Paleolithic sites were discovered in the basins of the Darvagchai and Rubas Rivers in southeastern Dagestan (Derevianko, Amirkhanov, Zenin, Anoikin, Rybin, 2004; Amirkhanov |
