This chapter describes two ways in which public awareness about horseshoe crabs can be increased. First, a modification of the largely volunteer-based spawning surveys, as exemplified by the Delaware Bay effort, can provide information on the “health” of the spawners. This would add an important dimension to spawning survey. There are probably 10 year-classes of spawners and it is obvious that all are not at the same level of health. Second, the conservation community and the public in general should be aware that populations of horseshoe crabs that are small in numbers are more at risk than large populations. |
