Two-slit interference in strong-field photodetachment of H−

Popis: | The evolution of multiphoton detachment of H− with laser intensity reveals striking interference features in the angular distribution of the detached photoelectrons. Using femtosecond infrared laser pulses we show that the two-photon detachment angular distribution changes from a d-wave pattern, predicted in terms of perturbation theory in the limit of low intensities, to preferential emission perpendicular to the laser polarization at higher intensities, when the electron energy decreases due to the ponderomotive shift. At intensities where the two-photon channel closes and the electron energy approaches zero, the expected s-wave distribution is observed, as required by the Wigner threshold law. We discuss these observations in terms of the analytical KFR-type theory proposed by Gribakin and Kuchiev. Their saddle-point analysis has recently been shown to quantitatively predict the electron spectra for photodetachment of H− in a strong laser field.
