This paper reports on the use of dynamic system characteristics (DSC’is) for monitoring of the structural integrity of structures in civil engineering. The experiments are made on two reinforced concrete beams. These beams, with a length of 6 m, are suspended from a frame by means of very elastic springs, in order to realize free boundary conditions during dynamic measurements. Cracks are induced by loading the mid-section of the beams in seven different steps. After each step, a complete Experimental Modal Analysis is performed to determine the DSC’s of the beams. Their evolution allows to draw conclusion about the suitability of the experimental techniques. This investigation is the first step in the development of a DSC based technique for monitoring damage in large concrete structures. It is shown here that increasing crack damage results in measurable frequency shifts, increasing curvature in the cracked zone and a shift of nodal points towards the centre of the beams. |
