Introduction

Popis: The introduction argues that a growing number of anthropologists and theologians are ready to engage each other’s discipline but struggle to find a framework that supports this type of inquiry. In December 2014, J. Derrick Lemons began a project that gathered anthropologists and theologians to discover how theology can aid the research of anthropologists of religion and how anthropology can aid theologians in developing a more nuanced and deeper understanding of faith. From this collaboration, two frameworks emerged—named stratified and transformational—within this approach to research called “theologically engaged anthropology.” The emergence of the field of theologically engaged anthropology opens the door for social scientists to use theology to gain a deeper understanding of religion and for theologians to learn from an engagement with “lived” religion across various times and societies. This introduction defines the stratified and transformational research frameworks.
