Summary. Endostemon viscosus which was earlier known only from South India, has been found in Sri Lanka. Differences in morphology and ecology between Indian and Sri Lankan populations as well as their affinity to African taxa are discussed. While working on a collection of Sri Lankan plants kept in the herbarium of the Swedish Museum of Natural History (S), we found a specimen of Endostemon viscosus (Roth) M. Ashby, a species hitherto not thought to be indigenous to Sri Lanka. Endostemon is a mostly African paleotropical genus. Paton et al. (1994) accepted 18 species, of which 17 are distributed in Africa, Madagascar and the Arabian Peninsula. Only one species, E. viscosus, occurs in Asia, and has hitherto been considered a South Indian endemic. |
