The oxidation behaviour in air of Fecralloy steel overlayers co-extruded on to 2 1 4 Cr 1 Mo ferritic steel, type 321 stainless steel and Incoloy 800H have been compared with that of the basic steel. The exposures were for extended periods up to 10kh duration at 100°C intervals between 400 and 1000°C (800°C for the 2 1 4 Cr 1 Mo steel substrate). To resolve the underlying cause of the order of magnitude greater attack of the as-extruded overlayers, the nature of the respective scales formed were characterised by a range of surface analytical techniques. The importance of the physical and chemical condition of the Fecralloy steel overlayer surface resulting from the extrusion processing was established by testing overlayers from which the original as-fabricated surface layer had been machined off. |
