Aggressive behavior in early childhood characterized by frequent, severe temper outbursts, causes high impairment and distress for families. Emerging evidence suggests that aggression which is impulsive or reactive may define a distinct group of children who experience severe behavior problems outside the context of a mood disorder. Accepted diagnostic frameworks do not adequately capture these symptoms, and matching children with effective treatment can pose a challenge to clinicians. Evidence-based assessment of aggressive behavior can help guide clinical practice, however gold-standard measures that differentiate between distinct forms of aggressive behavior have yet to be identified and disseminated. The current work reviews evidence for distinct forms of aggressive behavior from cognitive, contextual, and biological perspectives with an emphasis on distinctions between reactive and proactive forms. Next, a review available assessment tools compares the content coverage and psychometric properties of these instruments with the research on phenomenology through the lens of evidence-based assessment. Recommendations for measures are provided along with a discussion of future research directions. |
