In both Borneo and Sumatra, the illegal hunting of the orang-utan populations, as well as arson, deforestation and the accompanying fragmentation and habitat degradation due to selective logging, are the immediate, or proximate, causes of a dramatic, exponential decline in their numbers. These issues arise from the complex of impediments or ultimate causes (namely misconceptions, institutional deficiencies and ecological impediments) that were discussed earlier. Despite overwhelming odds, ranging from the world market down to the level of an individual person seeking to eke out a living, the problems can be tackled if the will to help the orangutan survive can be summoned, and a strategic plan is followed. |
