Popis: | The search for a queen honey bee, Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera: Apidae), which is lost from a swarm includes movement of worker bees from the swarm cluster to the lost queen and back again to the cluster; this activity may involve several round trips by a few workers. Breaking or “Schwirrlauf” dances are performed on the swarm cluster, and also at the queen's location. This behavior stimulates the clustered bees to become airborne. Concommitantly, Nassanoff scent is released by workers at both locations but predominantly in the vicinity of the queen. The Nassanoff pheromone attracts airborne workers that are searching for their lost queen. The frequency of breaking dances and scenting increases until the swarm becomes airborne and moves to the queen. |
