Popis: The study reported in this paper attempted an estimation of the transport allocation of industrial freight traffic in Nigeria using the method of discriminant analysis. For the purpose, two categories of industrial freight were distinguished, namely consignment outgoing from the industrial establishment and consignment incoming to the establishment. The object was to find out what linear combination of the characteristics of the consignment, the transport mode and the industrial establishment affected the allocation of the consignment to the observed mode rather than an alternative mode. While the analysis suggests that the variables used explain reasonably well the transport allocations of industrial freight traffic, it is observed that there is probably a significant degree of misallocation of the freight traffic between transport modes in Nigeria. This has implications for transport policy.
