Several rare earth polonides were prepared by reaction of polonium metal with the rare earth metal or hydride. The syntheses were carried out in compartmented sealed quartz reaction tubes contained in a furnace. The reactions were followed with a gamma scintillation probe which permitted monitoring of the gamma activity in the reaction chamber. Melting or decomposition points of the reaction products were obtained, and crystallographic data for several of the compounds were obtained by X-ray diffraction measurements. |
